Mosquito bites, that’s what. I feel like I’m finding a new one every hour. I was eaten alive while we were outside (next to a lake, no less) all day on Saturday. Naturally, I was the only one in my group of four to attract all the bug-love – lucky me.

In this month’s issue of Natural Health magazine, the feature an article that offers homeopathic remedies to bug relief. I’ve become more interested in homeopathic remedies over the last few years, and was definitely interested to see if these would work. I know there can be some nasty stuff in conventional bug spray, etc.

They offer information to prevent bites, stop itching, and heal fast. I went right to the “Stop Itching” section. Short of wearing oven mitts to prevent scratching, I was open to try almost anything. The article suggests using peppermint oil, a natural anti-inflammatory that eases irritation. The rationale behind it, according to Natural Health, is that menthol increases circulation to get disperse the skeeter-bite itchy chemicals. This made enough sense to me, AND I happened to have some peppermint oil in my medicine cabinet (I use it for my at-home facials). I applied a drop to many of my bites. Lo and behold, it seemed to work. It helps that I like the smell too.

It was easy, fast, and I’ll continue to use it as I get eaten alive… next step: test their natural bug repellent, Neem oil.

Seasonal Allergies

My allergies have been killer so far this season.  I actually never got seasonal allergies until some point in college a few years ago. Generally, I would get a little sneezy and have some nasal congestion for a few days. Nothing major, though. This year, however, my allergies have been pretty intense. My nose is extremely congested, my throat get ticklish, and my eyes are so itchy I want to claw them out.

I’ve been checking out some natural remedies to seasonal allergies. I have a neti pot that I use during cold season, and I’ve been trying to use it every morning to clear out my nasal passages. I also use local honey because I’ve read that using/consuming local products (namely honey) can be extremely helpful in combating allergies (from what I understand it almost works as a mini-vaccination… ie. it gives you a small dose of some of the stuff that may be causing your allergies…) and picked up some bee pollen today for the same reason. The jury is out, though, if they are working.

For more information, check out this podcast I found at Whole Foods. It’s part one of a series. It has some more specific answers regarding homeopathy.
